Sir,
Can you please tell me how to answer the IELTS question?

“there are many different types of music in the world today. Why do we need music? Is the traditional music of a country more important than the international music that is heard everywhere nowadays?”

Thanks and Regards

There are two distinct questions. The first one is to test your  conceptual clarity regarding the function of music.  The second one is,    you have to take a stance  for  or  against traditional music.

To answer the first question,  imagine a world without music.  It will be depressing.  There will be no conviviality or festivity. Human life will be a colorless existence. Now you know why we need music. It gives you joy. It brings people together. It adds  color to your life.

Secondly , find the relative importance of traditional Vs modern music. Traditional music is not international.  So it has limited appeal. International music
1.attracts all alike transcending the barriers  of race, religion and colour. For example Michael Jackson’s death was mourned by his fans all over the world.  The hollywood music industry  does business with every country in the world. International music has certain 2.democratic and  level-playing  behavior. You need not be a scholar or a socially elite person to appreciate international music.  Economic or social status is no constraint to either understand or  appreciate international music. Contrarily, unless one has learnt carnatic music through traditional ways , it will be difficult for one to appreciate or enjoy it.

3. International music is  a global industry employing thousands of people in various forms. It generates  huge revenue to a country.
Having  identified  3 core points , you have to  build on them by giving examples. You can even give examples from personal experience.  By all means you have to handle time( 20 minutes)   and length.(250 words)
