Your problem is lack of clarity and knowledge of vocabulary.
The word
'quail '
means shrinking back in fear . Lack of courage is to be in a state of quail. Now if you analyse the pairs of words ,
"pining'
is languishing or thinning down out of grief. Now you could make the connection.
